The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is truly vast – it is larger than the combined areas of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway, or nearly three and a half times the size of Texas! It is an enormous, resource-rich country that has long captivated the outside world as “The Heart of Darkness”. Our interest in the country however relates specifically to its biological and scenic riches.
The defining feature of the country is the second largest rainforest in the world. Rivers large and small snake throughout the country, and with a less than comprehensive road network, aquatic modes of transport remain the preferred means of getting around for many citizens to this day. The Congo River is the third largest river in the world measured by discharge—it even continues into the Atlantic, forming a submarine canyon roughly 50 miles (80 kilometres) to the edge of the continental shelf! It also has the distinction of being one of the deepest rivers in the world with depths up to 220 metres (720 feet). However, we won’t be accessing these depths, but rather those of the thick rainforests that blanket the Virunga Volcanoes. Home to the iconic Mountain Gorilla, Virunga National Park is finally rising to prominence through the joint efforts of local and international stakeholders, and offers incredible opportunities to trek for and photograph Mountain Gorillas. A further feature of this area is the string of volcanoes, including the active Nyiragongo, which make for a unique photographic experience.
The mythical natural riches of the Congo are finally becoming available again to the intrepid traveller, and we cannot wait to share the wonders of this remarkable nation with you!
