Spitsbergen, lying a mere 600 miles from the North Pole, is the largest island of the Svalbard Archipelago. Draped in darkness during the long northern winter, this frigid land is dramatically transformed into a place of perpetual sunshine during our summer expedition cruises. The scenery is nothing short of breathtaking, with towering snowcapped mountains, forbidding glaciers and flower-studded tundra. An abundance of iconic Arctic mammals is a major attraction, including whales, Walrus, Arctic Fox, Reindeer and the fabulous Polar Bear, of which we stand an excellent chance of close and personal encounters. Possible avian specialties include Sabine’s and Ivory Gull, King Eider and vast colonies of breeding alcids, including Little Auks (Dovekies) and Brunnich’s Guillemots. This shorter North Spitsbergen - Polar Bear special takes us to the pack ice at 81°N where we hope to spend quality time watching and photographing these iconic super-predators, of which we stand an excellent chance of close and personal encounters.

better shots. It felt as though he was always there for advice, without any
kind of forced structure.’
